A private family app: where to keep everything your family shares in one place
Updated November 2, 2026 · 6 min read
The problem: your family’s information is scattered
The wedding photos are on one sister’s phone, grandma’s recipe is on a scrap of paper in someone’s pocket, the insurance policy is in dad’s email, and an aunt’s birthday lives only in mom’s head. A family chat group is great for messages, but what is sent in it sinks within days, and you cannot search it for "that document from last year".
When the information is scattered, even a simple question, like when we celebrated grandpa’s birthday, becomes a search through four apps. And the details that really matter disappear when the person who remembered them is gone.
What a family really needs to keep
- A family tree and the life stories of your parents and grandparents
- Photos by year, and a family album
- The family’s recipes, and the poems and stories it loves
- Documents: certificates, contracts, receipts, policies
- Important dates with reminders: birthdays, anniversaries, memorial days, vacations and events
- Shopping lists and household tasks, including tasks that repeat
- A family budget
- Milestones of the children, and the family pets
Privacy and permissions: what to check before you choose
Family information includes sensitive details: certificates, birth dates, addresses and photos of children. Before you upload it to any service, it is worth asking:
- Who can see it? Only the people you invited, or others as well?
- Can you give each person a different level of access: view, edit or nothing, and maybe even for each subject separately?
- Can you turn off parts you do not need?
- Are there ads, tracking cookies or third-party analytics tools?
- Where is the information stored, and who holds it?
- Can you export the information and leave at any moment, without losing it?
A comparison: a chat group, a cloud drive, a genealogy site and a private family app
The comparison is general: it describes the type of tool, not a particular service, and specific services may differ.
| Chat group | Cloud drive | Genealogy site | Private family app | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick messages | Yes | No | No | Partly |
| Organized storage of information | No | Partly (folders) | The tree only | Yes, in several areas |
| A different permission for each person | No | Yes, by folder | Varies | Yes, for each part separately |
| Reminders for dates | No | No | Varies | Yes |
| Family tree and life stories | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Recipes, lists and documents | No | Documents only | No | Yes |
How to start without a headache
- Create the family and invite two or three close people first. Widening the circle comes later.
- Turn on only the parts you will really use. You can add the rest when the time comes.
- Set permissions: who only views and who also edits, for each part separately.
- Add one real thing: grandma’s recipe, or your parents and yourself in the family tree.
- Install it on your phone’s home screen so it is easy to open, and turn notifications on in the settings.
- Build a small habit: add one thing a week, such as a photo or a date.
How 1family.Home does it
1family.Home is a private family app. Each family has a closed space, and the family admin turns on the parts they want and sets, for each member, whether they view, edit or have no access, separately for each part.
- A family tree and life stories, with a family book to print
- Recipes, including a recipe from a photo and a shopping list in one tap
- Documents in folders, in private storage, with a temporary 24-hour link for one-off sharing
- Dates and reminders with guests and replies for events
- Shared lists with a person responsible in their own color and tasks that repeat
- A budget, milestones of the children, the family pets, conversations and a shared note
The site works in the browser, with no app store: you add it to the home screen once. There are no ads and no third-party tracking tools inside the app (the public pages count visits anonymously, with cookies only if you agree), and there is a free plan with all the features. Details are on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a private family app and a WhatsApp group?
- A chat group suits messages. A family app keeps organized information you can find later, such as a tree, documents and recipes, with a different permission for each person and reminders for dates.
- Can I turn on only some of the parts?
- Yes. The family admin chooses which parts to turn on and which to turn off, and what permission each member has in each part.
- Who can see our family’s information?
- Only people invited to the family. One family does not see another family’s information unless both families approved linking their trees.
- How much does it cost?
- You can start for free: there is a free plan with all the features, and a paid Pro plan for large storage and extras. Current prices are on the pricing page.
- Do I need to download an app from a store?
- No. The site works in the browser, and you can add it to the home screen on iPhone and Android.
In one sentence
When your family’s information is in one closed place, everyone finds what they need, and nobody is exposed to what was not meant for them.
